The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) which was founded in 1971 is a long-standing member of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA), the world bodies for 2, 3 and 4 wheeler motor sport respectively.

The FMSCI is the only national motor sport federation recognised by the Government of India for the promotion and control of motor sport in India, and is affiliated to the prestigious Indian Olympic Association.

For the first time in India, FMSCI has given a nod for drag racing in India. Drag racing is simply a competition in which specially prepared motorcycles compete two at a time to be the first to cross a set finish line, from a standing start, in a straight line, over a measured distance.

According to a recent article in rushlane.com, "It is now being introduced to India under the guidance of Federation of Motor Sports of India through organizers namely Spitfire Motorsports and Speedway Motorsports. Mr. Vicky Chandok, President of FMSCI said that this is the first time such championships have been organized officially in India, though unofficially, such races have been already taking part across the country."

The first official drag race in India will be on a 400 metres racing strip. All across the globe, the race track, known as a drag strip will make use of an electronic timing system to determine the winner. The Indian drag racing strip will also most likely go ahead in the same way. The first race will take place at Hyderabad. But the good news is that Coimbatore and Bangalore will also have a chance during the coming months to organize these drag races.

We've been getting news on Hero MotoCorp which has come up with 2 new models, an all new global strategy and so on. Now let's get back to the parent company which was the 'Honda'. HMSI is likely to come up with a 100 cc bike in the entry segment to catch the masses and to increase its market share in India, which is the world's second largest market for two wheelers.

According to Economic Times, 'Honda Motors has appointed five  management teams across India  led by Japanese executives to create  a new decentralised marketing structure for consistent sales.'

It seems that the Japanese maker is considering the idea of working on  a new bike based on the CD  platform of HMC's. Hero’s CD Dawn and CD  Deluxe have the highest sales when it comes to bikes built  on the CD  platform.

This yet to be designed bike is targeted exclusively for the rural  market which contributes almost  half of the volumes to the nearly 5  million bikes Hero sells every year. While the company has been   launching high displacement bikes like the CBR 250R, this strategy of  Honda is considered to be one of the most important one.

“The company is currently focusing and tweaking bikes relevant for  the Indian market to get closer to the customer”, said Mr. Abdul  Majeed, Auto Practice Leader, PwC. The 100 cc bike segment is what  led to the huge success of the earlier Hero Honda which is the volume segment. The Splendor and Passion brand of bikes were the most successful among the lot. Last year, Honda sold its 26% stake in Hero Honda to India’s Munjal family while the technology agreement between Hero and Honda permits the former to use the joint name in products till 2014.

Honda, which owns the CD brand globally jointly with Hero, is likely to bring in a new improved engine with fresh design cues to attract young and rural India. Hero’s claim on the CD brand exists only till 2014, by when Honda wants to emerge as a major player in the Indian circuit. However, the company said it aims to emerge as a major player in India in the next few years as it comes up with strategies to consolidate.

With the present strategies that Honda uses like launching an exclusive bike for a rural market, the company is travelling in the right path towards its aim of emerging as a major player in the Indian two wheeler market.

Scooters have always proved to provide a good ROI in India right from the time they were launched here. Bajaj dominated the market for a long time (of course, with the geared ones!). Then came the Japanese maker Honda which thoroughly studied the market and the dominated with just one model – The Honda Activa.

But, still I always felt that India lacks the power scooters – Scooters which are really powerful to take bikes head-on. The only model and company which catered this need was the Kinetic with its Blaze model. This particular model was a big flop in the Indian market and the company was forced to stop the production itself.

Now, Yamaha Motor India (YMI), a fully owned subsidiary of Japan's Yamaha is seriously planning to enter the scooter segment. That doesn't mean in any aspect that they'll come up with fierce looking high displacement engine scooters.

Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO and managing director  of Yamaha Motor India said in an interview to the Business Standard, "We are planning to launch scooters next year. We will share the details at an appropriate time. We definitely see our foray into the segment as something that will strengthen our foothold in the two-wheeler segment. We are hopeful our entry will provide an impetus to rev up sales and increase our market share."

This means that the company should have already started working on the scooter for India by now. But, the sad part is that we have no clues about the model.

Regarding the future plans of the company, "We will launch top-end products since we are doing quite well in the premium and deluxe segments where we aim to achieve 20 per cent share by the end of this year. We see a high demand for such products in the B and C category towns and in rural markets. We also aim to achieve one million unit sales by 2013 and look to invest $10 million by 2012 in capacity expansion as well as in new product development." he said.

When asked about the ones doing well in terms of sales, Mr. Suzuki said, "Speaking in terms of sales, our premium and deluxe segment models (which simply means 150cc+ ) YZF-R15, FZ series and SZ series have done extremely well in the Indian market. We have been able to achieve a market share of 14 per cent in deluxe segment over the last two months. We will continue to focus on this segment, particularly in B and C category towns to increase the penetration levels. However, our focus will not lessen in the entry-level segment as this segment has also been instrumental in driving sales."

He also confirmed the fact that YMI will open its third plant by the end of this year. Regarding this he said, "We have facilities at Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad in Haryana. The Surajpur plant can roll out 600,000 motorcycles a year, which can be expanded to one million units, while the Faridabad plant can manufacture engines and other components. So, there is no immediate need. But yes, we will start planning for a new factory by the end of this year."

Finally he answered a question regarding the future strategy of the company by saying. "We plan to sell 500,000 motorcycles this year (domestic 350,000 units and export 150,000 units) and look to achieve overall 10 per cent market share over the next few years with new product offerings, enhanced sales and service network and strong marketing initiatives."

This clearly reveals the fact that Yamaha Motor India has indeed got very clear ideas atleast for the next few years especially for the Indian market. Great going Yamaha!
