Ask any biker about their dream bike and Ducati always seems to be the unanimous choice. Revving up the spirit of youth and refurbishing the country's biking culture, Ducati India launched its first showroom in Bangalore with a 3S facility. With disposable incomes on the rise and the economy growing faster than expected, these bike makers see India as a potential market. Founded in 1926, Ducati builds racing inspired motorcycles characterized by unique features, innovative design, advanced engineering and overall technical excellence.

The company produces motorcycles in six markets segments which vary in their technical and design features and intended customers: Superbike, Desmosedici RR, Monster, Multistrada, Sport Classic and Hypermotard. The company’s motorcycles are sold in 80 countries worldwide, with a primary focus in the Western European, Japan and North American markets. Ducati has won fourteen of the last seventeen World Superbike championship titles and more individual victories than the competition put together. Since 2003 it has also taken part in the MotoGP World Championship and in 2007 it won both the Constructors’ and Riders’ world titles.

Ashish Chordia, CEO of Ducati India, says “With India’s appreciation of luxury bikes and the opening of this showroom bike lovers can now experience what riders across the world have experienced for over a century. Also the facility will offer bikers everything they need to enjoy their Ducatis, including latest model range, technical support, parts accessories and apparels.” Also with the launch, Ducati unveiled the spectacular Ducati Diavel which is without any doubt, the most exciting innovation because it represents a new concept of motorcycle.

"It is a naked bike because it is essential, light and agile: a cruiser because it is imposing and also comfortable with a passenger: and a sports bike because it has a powerful heart, muscles, and levels of performance that take your breath away," says Mirko Bordiga, CEO Ducati Asia Pacific. He continues, "Until now, no segment has ever captured these characteristics in just one motorcycle. If the Multistrada 1200 represents the perfect synthesis between functionality and performance, the Diavel creates a new interpretation of performance, this time combined with technology and design."

The Ducati showroom at Lavelle road will display all models of the bike. However the latest ground-breaking Ducati will be available in three versions. Prices for the Diavel start from Rs 17.06 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base, the Carbon variant retails at Rs 22.06 lakh and the top end Carbon Red variant is priced at Rs 22.43 lakh. Now even Bangaloreans can hop on and take a ride on this 'no less magic' bike!

10 Tips to Avoid Accidents While Riding in the City

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 06:15 AM PDT

Original Source: 10 Tips to Avoid Accidents While Riding in the City from BikeAdvice.in

  1. First of all ensure to remove your side stand before starting the bike.
  2. Never ride your bike when you are angry or frustrated.
  3. Don't try to overtake in Corner's or in sharp bends and before overtaking make sure you overtake from the right side so that the driver can spot you easily.
  4. Don't brake hard or use your disc brake when you ride on the fine layer of sand near the edges of the road. Sand proves to be the worst enemy for bikers and cause most accidents especially in cities.
  5. Don't panic and lock your wheels when you encounter a Speed Bump suddenly instead of concentrating on down shifting pull the clutch and apply your front brake first and gradually your rear brake.
  6. Always make sure you use your L/R Indicator while turning this to Left or Right 30 M ahead of your turn this will ensure you are not getting hit by vehicles from behind.
  7. Never follow Heavy vehicles or Car's very closely because when they brake hard you will have less time/No time to react.
  8. Ensure to note that with Pillion rider the bike behaves slightly different in accelerating and in braking .So calculate accordingly before you overtake other vehicles.
  9. The most important thing you have to do is to believe in you that you can stop your bike at proper time no matter what may come.
  10. Ride with proper riding gear especially with helmet (fasten your helmet straps) and ride safely. Remember after all someone is waiting for all of us back home.

Ride Hard Ride Safe.

Why Bajaj Auto Wants to Re-launch 150cc Boxer (Bharat Motorcycle) in India?

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 01:24 AM PDT

Original Source: Why Bajaj Auto Wants to Re-launch 150cc Boxer (Bharat Motorcycle) in India? from BikeAdvice.in

Ever since Bajaj announced that it will re-launch Boxer in India, a question always strikes in my mind "Why Bajaj wants to re-launch Boxer (Bharat motorcycle) in India?" Is there something wrong with Bajaj Auto who wants to establish itself as a global premium motorcycle manufacturer? Bajaj Auto which always wanted to move customer from entry level to executive segment, is now trying to re-enter entry level segment but why?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The company (under the leadership of Rajiv Bajaj), which always aimed India's two wheeler market is now aiming Bharat's two wheeler market and that too with 150cc motorcycle. This article aims to answer all of the above questions. But before we start, let's have background of Boxer.

Background Story of Boxer

It was the year 1997 when Bajaj Auto launched Boxer in India. It was a time when the Indian two wheeler market was shifting from scooter to motorcycle. Boxer was launched in the entry level segment and soon it became the reference brand in this segment. It became the most popular in the rural and semi urban area due to its rugged performance and durability. Bajaj Auto was able to sell 50,000 Boxers each month which was enough to make it second largest selling two wheeler brand and largest selling entry level segment motorcycle in India. As far as sales concern only Splendor managed to outdo Boxer.

The major reason of Boxer brand’s success was its unmatchable price. It was undercutting its major competitor Hero Honda's motorcycle by whopping Rs.8,000. May of us would be surprised to know that Bajaj Auto had initially made a loss of Rs. 1,500 on each Boxer sold. Later with the strong volume growth and effective cost management, Bajaj Auto started making profit of Rs. 4,000 on each Boxer.

The company also introduced its various variants like AT, CT & AR at different price points. It was Boxer which started trend of various variant for a single brand in India. To control and expand its presence in entry level segment, Bajaj Auto discontinued Boxer in 2004 and replaced it with CT 100. CT100 also became another success story for Bajaj Auto in the entry level segment.

Why a "Bharat motorcycle"?

Is there any difference if we say "India" or "Bharat"? As far as name concern it is just one name used for another name like "Hindustan" for "India". Just like William Shakespeare famous quote, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” But it makes huge difference as far as market segmentation is concern. India refers to a market segment which is modern, civilized, educated, life style oriented, while Bharat refers to a market segment which is traditional, uncivilized, uneducated and value oriented.

It refers to two different mindsets of people which can be described with names like "Harry" and "Hari". A first segment refers to person like "Harry" and the second refers to "Hari". "Harry" is mostly found in urban area while "Hari" is mostly found in rural/semi urban area. Please note we are referring two different mindsets of people and not referring to place here. Although the proportion is very less, you may find "Hari" in urban area and "Harry" in rural/semi urban area. The fact cannot be ignored that still "Hari" accounts for a larger part of a total population of the country.

Here comes "Bharat motorcycle" in picture. Bajaj Auto has classified market segment as Ram and Krishna. According to Rajiv Bajaj "Ram is the good guy who buys a bike for functional reasons while Krishna is the naughty guy who wants some fun with his bike."

As far as this two segment concern Bajaj Auto has Discover (commuter) for Ram and Pulsar (sports) for Krishna. But when it comes to India and Bharat, Bajaj Auto's most of the products are targeted to India. The company does not have a strong product solely for "Bharat". It also revels in its marketing slogan. Before 10-12 years the marketing slogan was "Naye Bharat ki Nayi Tasveer, Hamara Bajaj" (Hindi for New picture of new India, Ours Bajaj). Now it's "Discover India with power of 1 liter", "India's number 1 sports bike".

As mentioned major portion of Bharat population lives in rural/semi urban area. It is the area where market penetration of two wheelers is just 10% compared to 25% of urban area. The fact which Hero Honda identified years ago and same reflected in its marketing strategy. In the year 2007 Hero Honda formed a rural division dedicated to increase its penetration in rural and semi urban area.

They started a rural campaign "Har Gaon Har Agan" (Hindi for Every Village, Every Home). The company planned to cover 1,00,000 villages out of country's 6,00,000 villages under this rural campaign. Rural ("Bharat") is a segment where sales drive more through word of mouth publicity than advertising. So under this rural campaign Hero Honda dealers started meeting Sarpanches, Headmasters, aanganwadi workers who influence buyer's decision in rural segment.

Result, today hero Honda's 45% sales come through rural segment which was around 30% few years back. The company has now 5,000 touch points under this program and is targeting to sale 1 out 2 bike (50%) from rural segment within this or next year. Moreover, rural segment prefers to buy in cash and it is more loyal to its brand. The segment is also showing high disposable income growth due to increase prices of vegetables and grains. This is the segment which helped Hero Honda to increase its sales at the time of credit crisis in the year 2008-09 (This is a strong reason why Hero Honda is doing 5,00,000 units a month). In short this is a market segment for Bajaj Auto which it can't ignore.

Why Entry level Segment?

The motorcycle segment is mainly classified into three categories Entry level (Commuter Standard), Executive (Commuter Deluxe) and Performance/Premium (sports). Further on the price front it can be classified as less than Rs. 40,000 (Entry), Rs. 40,000 – Rs. 50,000 (Executive), more than Rs. 50,000 (Premium). Most of the entry level segment volume comes from rural area. Consumer of this segment just wants basic motorcycle. This segment was accounting in the range of 40- 43% of country's total motorcycle sales till 2005-06 but currently it accounts for only 16% of country's total motorcycle sales with around 1.5 million unit sales each year. The major reason behind decline in market share of entry level segment is discontinuation of top performing model Bajaj CT 100 and TVS Max 100. Combined sales of both were in excess of 1 ,00,000 units/month.

Bajaj Auto traditionally ruled the entry level segment till it discontinued CT100. The company discontinued CT100 because it wanted to leave the 100cc segment. After that it launched Platina in this segment but it fails to clock the same volume as CT100. Currently Bajaj Auto has constrained Platina monthly production to 40,000 units a month and it currently doing sales volume of 30,000 – 35,000 units a month.

Currently Hero Honda CD series motorcycle rules this segment. Hero Honda has seen massive jump in the sales of CD series motorcycle in the last financial year. If Hero Honda is doing good year on year volume growth in the entry level segment, why Bajaj Auto cannot do the same when it has traditionally ruled this segment? Moreover, the segment is mainly contracted due to the discontinuation of CT 100. A right product may increase entry level segment market share in total two wheeler sales. Lastly, this segment is a key to penetrate rural/semi urban area. Once you have strong product for entry level segment, you can leverage the sales of executive and premium segment in rural/semi urban area.

Why Boxer Brand?

Can I ask the same question in another way, "Why TVS motors re-launched Max brand?" It is easy to re-launch the same brand in the same segment especially when it was leader in the past. As mentioned earlier Boxer was a reference brand in entry level segment and that will do half job for Bajaj Auto's marketing team. The Boxer brand also has record of leadership. It has never failed in any market. Take example of Africa where it rules the entry level segment despite competing with Japanese and Chinese motorcycle. Boxer brand also helped Bajaj Auto in the time of credit crisis by growing its sales number on month on month basis. It is also possible that Bajaj Auto wants a universal brand like Boxer for entry level segment.

Why a 150 cc motorcycle?

Almost all of the motorcycles in entry level segment have engine capacity of 100 or 125cc. If Bajaj Auto will re-launch 100cc Boxer then it's just another motorcycle of entry level segment. But having a motorcycle with engine capacity of 150cc in the entry level segment will make a big difference. It is a segment where motorcycle is used more for utility purpose rather than commuter purpose.

This segment demands a robust motorcycle that can carry a heavy load and can run on rough roads, so the original idea is to have a 150cc motorcycle which has minimum 50% more torque than 100cc motorcycle and only 10% less fuel efficiency than 100cc motorcycle. In the words of Rajiv Bajaj "What I want is a tractor on a two-wheeler that can take two or three riders and the extra load of products on it, or simply a 150-cc."

Moreover there are two major facts which we cannot ignore. HMSI is working on $600 (Rs. 27,000) motorcycle and Hero Honda is planning Nano avatar of motorcycle. Both of which will compete with the existing entry level segment motorcycle. So, instead of having competition Bajaj Auto wants to create a new segment for its Boxer motorcycle.

Conclusion

There is difference between "doing things right" (Efficiency) and "doing right things" (Effectiveness). Bajaj Auto left 100cc motorcycle segment and entry level segment few years back while Hero Honda penetrated this market in the absence of strong competition. Soon Bajaj Auto realized its mistake and reentered 100cc segment with the launch of Discover 100cc. Bajaj Auto has become efficient manufacturer of motorcycle but it is still in the process of learning effective marketing.

Hero Honda entered rural segment when none of the competitor had strong foothold in this segment. Bajaj Auto has now realized that rural segment is going to play a significant role of total two wheeler sales in the country. Not only Bajaj Auto but almost each two wheeler manufacturer is preparing to tap large potential of rural segment which is called as "Bharat".

Bajaj Pulsar 180 Review by Benjamin Praveen

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 12:21 AM PDT

Original Source: Bajaj Pulsar 180 Review by Benjamin Praveen from BikeAdvice.in

Hi friends, I am Benjamin Praveen 21 years old, finished my engineering this year. This is my first review about my lover (bike) in website. First of all I should thank God and then Deepak bro for his website who let us to post our bike reviews.

I am not going to specify any technical specifications about my bike since everyone know about it from other reviews, I just want to share the moments which I spent with my bike.

History

It's a great story about how I got my eight years dream bike. It's like a first sight love when I saw the ad of definitely male Pulsar ad which displayed that bike turning its head towards a nurse while she was passing by. From that day onwards I started collecting wrappers and ad papers of Pulsar from various moto magazines. My friend also helped me in collecting those papers.

Daily I used to show the papers and tv ads to my mom asking for my bike. But because of financial problems my parents can't afford me my dream bike. While I was studying 11th my cousin brother bought his new Hero Honda Splendor Plus, he only taught me to ride the geared bike. But he went abroad for work within few months after buying his bike.

I started using it from my 11th standard to my B.E, 2nd year. My brother came back during my 2nd year end. During those 4 years I forget my dream bike since Splendor Plus consoled me during those days. But eager started when I stopped using my brother's bike. So now I again started asking for my dream bike to ma parents.

One year gone without using any bike and lost my sleeps during night time because of this issue. At last with great pressure my parents got my eight years dream bike New Pulsar 180UG4 (2009 Edition) on 20th September 2010. Now I am happy and proud that I am owner of one of Pulsar family, yes it is the elder brother of Pulsar 135LS/150 and younger brother of 220S/220F.

Naming

Although it had name as Pulsar but I thought it should be unique from other Pulsars. So I named it as Road Frighter. For 220 there is name like 220S Street Fighter and for 135LS Light Sports, 180 also needs something different, So I kept this name after a great research. This Name also had reason which I will explain in other context. Road Frighter stickered in tank scoops.

Reason For Choosing 180

I didn't go for delivery of my bike since I was attending exam, I just went for booking of my bike. Before I was booking I don't know anything about Pulsar 180 even its technical specifications, I just saw the bike in photos and had a clear idea that its look is something different from Pulsar 150 and other old Pulsars.

Since I was using Splendor Plus during those four years I stopped collecting Pulsar ads and even don't know the release of new Pulsar 180 in 2009. I heard that bajaj don't have resale value and it's Pulsar need lot of maintenance. Simply I just need a different variant with a mileage of 45-55kmpl so went for this Beast and who is going to sell his bike immediately after purchasing so didn't bother about resale value. But now I can tell this one needs less maintenance since I had completed 4861kms with only normal two free services.

First Day With Ma Dream Bike

Yes this is really a beast, while I took my bike outside the home on first day I really felt bad that we would have chosen 150 instead of 180 because of its weight and while getting into its seat I felt it is too height. But From next day onwards I sticked to it. Yes don't feel it is too weight or too height, it suits well for 5.7'inch guys, so don't worry friends. I asked sales officer whether I can adjust my bikes height where I bought this bike. But he told, he who is 5.6' inch itself can ride this bike what's problem with me.

Hard Days With My Bike

After getting my bike at Tirunelveli I took it to Tirupur because of some personal reasons. Since it is near to my college I used to take it to ma college. I studied in fully residential college where bikes are prohibited. But I used to take it, it is around 80kms from my home to college. Since I took it before my first service itself to a long distance I went only in 60kmph around 4k rpm.

After first service I used to go in 70kmph. Now I used to go in 90kmph normally in highways and in city around 55kmph. I am getting around 40-45kmpl in city and 50-55kmpl in highways. I used to go to Coimbatore from Tirupur through Avinashi route, one day while returning I was trying to overtake a lorry which was going slowly.

But there was a bus in front of me which was not in motion but while I covered half of the lorry, lorry started increasing speed and bus also started from its idle position. Only because of Pulsar 180 I crossed both the vehicle with only a little gap through which my bike went. If it crossed there won't be any space to go.

Excitement didn't stop there, after crossing that situation, a big sandstorm occurred near Karumathampatti where only because of this new Pulsars weight I didn't fell down. After that rain started and I was seeing all the bikers are standing in a shielded or shadow place, but my bike didn't allow me to join with them I just overcome that situation too with less difficulties.

Fun Time With My Bike

Once I was going in six lane Coimbatore road , while crossing Nav India stop where signal had been released at the time when I reached there, I was trying to overtake a car by left side, but it was going to turn left, suddenly I applied both the brakes, if it is some other bikes other than FZ it would have felt down, but my bikes rear MRF Zapper tyre helped me a lot and didn't let me there to stop, I overcame that situation with very ease manner.

When it happened nearby me two college girls were walking who was afraid because of the sound made by my tyre and thought I am going to fell down, So only I named it as Road Frighter. I don't need any separation as streets or highways just want to say it will frighten the people in any roads. On another day while I was going through city my bike ran over a stone in road, where this MRF Zapper helped me a lot.

Once I met an accident, it was my mistake I didn't put signal and suddenly turned right, one who was trying to overtake me dashed me at rear, he felt down but with great shakes I didn't fell down only because of its great stability. Don't need to worry about non-kick start because I used to keep my bike in home idle for more than two weeks and while starting after that also no problem had occurred till now.

Advatages of Non Faired Model

Once I was going in highway to Coimbatore from Tirupur, since Avinashi route is so much traffic I escaped easily from all jams, but while I was trying to overtake lengthy containers lorry with many vehicles coming in front I just easily came out but a R15 was struggling to overtake because of its fairing.

Same situation occurred in same trip after travelling few kms by another R15. I think all faired vehicles have difficulties in city as well as congested highways. So I suggest you friends, if you are going for Fastest Indian just go for 220S than 220F so that you can clear the road easily with it.

Also I suggest friends if you have idea of taking Pulsar 150 you can just try 180 since it is giving mileage around same factor, my friend who is having Pulsar 150 UG4.5 who bought same time when I bought getting same mileage like me, also it(180) costs only 5k more than 150 with full of stylish and sporty look.

Bad Time With My Bike

One disadvantage in this bike is while simply standing if we apply front brake it will make us fall. Ya I had a situation one day while after purchasing things I took my bike, while turning it I applied front brake since an auto was also turning in front of me, I was not in motion but it fell down on my legs, because of its weight I suffered a lot at that situation.

Difference Between 180 UG4 AND 220S

Pulsar 220S Model have some little additional features from 180 which won't make great changes in these two in terms of looking. Additional features are pointed below,

  • Aluminium silencer
  • Air cooled Engine
  • 220cc Engine Capacity
  • Rear Disc brake
  • Black Grab rails and handlebar for midnight black theme Pulsars

Pros

  • Split seats provide more space for seating of both rider as well as pillion
  • Rear tyre provides more stability
  • Height and weight provides more confidence for youths
  • Nice pick up and zero vibration at any speeds
  • More stylish and sporty foot rest.

Cons

  • Height sometimes won't suite for short guys
  • Grab rails provide great sporty look with no use
  • Saree guard didn't have extended foot rest, difficult for ladies to rest their both legs while sitting one side position
  • Turning radius is large and difficult to turn the bike mostly in streets

Verdict

I don't need to compare this bike with others since every bike have its unique features, Pros and Cons. So we can't judge each bike comparing with others. But for sure this bike is a great value for money. Surely you won't feel bad for buying this bike. While owning it don't roar in road too much since there is Fastest Indian (Pulsar220) and others (R15 etc.,) are there to do it. Respect other bikes in road too.

One Common Advice

Friends while driving vehicle whether it may be two or four wheelers, during night time don't use high beam unnecessarily, use it for pass purpose or if the road is so dark. Don't use while vehicle is coming in front of you, since it may lead it to accidents. Once again I thank Deepak Bro for giving this opportunity and thank you friends for reading my review patiently.

Regards,
Benjamin Praveen

With the aid of Ducati UK, the Sussex Safer Road Partnership has produced a creative and emotional film intended to help reduce the amount of motorcycle related accidents on UK roads and makers hope that its effective message of responsibility will reach around the world.

The short film called 'Stay A Hero, Stay Safe' features a Ducati 848 ridden by the father of a young boy who is waiting for him to return home. While waiting, the boy aspires to be just like his father by trying to recreate the excitement and pleasure of motorcycling with items found in his garage.

The aim of the heart-warming film is to promote the joy of motorcycling, while underlining the responsibility that riders have to themselves their families and the wider road using public. To achieve this, the advert takes on a refreshingly positive style of communication and is effective because it conveys the inspirational role that motorcyclists must play for future generations.

Ducati was chosen because of their enthusiastic response to the positive safety message of the film and, as the Italian manufacturer is a recognised leader in creating inspirational motorcycles, the Sussex Safer Road Partnership considered it to be the perfect pairing. In the same way that the film intends to inspire safe riding now and in the future, Ducati are famous for building inspirational motorcycles.

Ken Seymour, Manager of the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, said: "We at the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership are committed to reducing all types of collision on our road network and are raising the profile of motorcyclists as our data infers this is the time to start to remind riders of their responsibilities. 'Stay a Hero' isn't your usual shocking public service film. Instead we hope that it will connect with the motorcycle community and generate discussion that helps to protect people on our roads."

The film was made by Alexander Commercials and is the second pairing of Writer/Director Daniel Cox and Producer Sarah Alexander and its dialogue-free story is hoped to increase its global reach and potential to deliver the important safety message of responsibility to the world's motorcycling community.
